Filigree processing:

As in every refined gold processing, the invention of filigree is lost in the mists of time and, in Sardinia, an age-long experience brought this processing technique to the highest levels of perfection and beauty.

It is a peculiar technique which needs the goldsmith's skills which are equalled by no modern machinery in the precious refinement obtained by craftsmen when they work with noble metal. Patience, precision and an age-long experience permit gold modelling in elegant shapes, but, above all, the esthetic principles gives life to this precious metal.

The process starts with the creation of the gold wire from the precious metal. Gold ductility permits to create an extremely thin wire (below o,3 mm in section) but with a remarkablee length. The traditional technique of the filigree decoration consists of two interwined fine gold threads which are twisted in order to obtain a unique wire. The wire is then welded onto a curved sheet of gold, round or oval in shape, by rolling it around a bright, minute gold ball which is in the middle. This decoration is called Corbula.

The excellent plasticity of gold does not permit to use metallic tools during this phase because the reflecting filigree surface can be damaged therefore only thanks to a meticolous hand-making it is possible to realize a circular spirals as it is shown by the finished jewel.

Filigree is made of a twisted gold wire which is possible to weave in much more complex shapes and also interwoven in fine and soft threads of an extraordinary value.

Filigree processing gives the jewel a different brightness as if light could be trapped by the thick interlacing of gold wires and, then, slowly released, putting in evidence shapes and exalting its creator's expressiveness.
